NATE offers several credential pathways to match where a technician is in their career. Ready-to-Work is the entry-level credential designed for HVAC students and new hires. The traditional Core + Specialty pathway combines a 50-question Core exam with a 100-question specialty exam in disciplines like Air Conditioning, Air Distribution, Gas Heating, Heat Pumps, Hydronics, Light Commercial Refrigeration, or Commercial Refrigeration. The newer CHP-5 (Certified HVAC Professional) pathway replaces the traditional long-format exams with five 30-question modular exams covering HVAC Fundamentals, Electrical and Controls, Comfort and Airflow, Installation, and Service, which technicians can pass individually over time. Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst is the top-tier credential for senior technicians.
Exam pricing varies by testing center, but for the CHP-5 pathway NATE Deluxe Members pay roughly $75 per exam and Full Members pay about $106 per exam, with similar economics for Core and Specialty. Contractors use NATE credentials to justify premium labor rates, meet manufacturer and utility rebate program requirements, and build internal career ladders that reward continuous learning.
